FAQ

What is an archivist?

An archivist is an individual who works with records, both recent and historical, that belong to individuals, organizations, and businesses.   An archivist's work includes the following:  deciding what records to keep, organizing records so researchers can find the information they need, providing reference to archival collections, preserving records,
and creating exhibits and websites.  Some common archival settings include: colleges and universities, government, historical societies, and businesses.

Does UWM have an archival program?

Yes it does! For more information about the archival program, contact archives program coordinator Amy Cooper Cary at amyccary@sois.uwm.edu.

Do I have to be in the archival education program to join?

Absolutely not!  We encourage all of the Library and Information Science and History students to join.  Insights from others will help us grow.

What does the student chapter do?

We provide a variety of social, educational, and volunteer activities.  For example, we tour local archives, hold informal talks and discussions, sponsor bake sales and other fund-raisers, and attend professional meetings. We also want to help each other become prepared for the real world, so we hold sessions on resume writing and interviewing.  We also set up study groups for the Library and Information Science comprehensive exam.

Why should I join?

Although it is a closely guarded secret, archivists are some of the coolest, funniest, and most interesting people you will ever meet!
