Textbooks:
Required:

  • Taylor, Arlene G   Introduction to Cataloging and Classification  10th ed.
  • Haynes, Elizabeth and Fountain, Joanna  Unlocking the Mysteries of Cataloging : A Workbook of Examples     c2005

Optional for purchase:

  • Anglo-American Cataloging Rules
  • Understanding MARC Bibliographic
  • Understanding MARC Authority
  •

These last three are available on-line but can be purchased if desired.  For these texts, including Dewey and LC Subject Headings listed below, the most recent edition is preferable but an older edition might work.  Let me know which edition you are using and I will see if it is OK.  An edition older than Dewey 20 is probably a problem and a subject heading set older than 10 years old will make it harder to follow along with examples.

Access is also needed to the following resources: (These will not be needed until the second half of the semester.  Much of the work with these resources can be done on-line but you might find it helpful to access a paper copy at some point.  Your local library may have these resources and allow you to use them in-house)

  • Library of Congress Subject Headings
  • Dewey
  • Library of Congress Classification Schedules
  •

For anyone interested or in need of additional practice, the following two workbooks are available from the publisher.  I will not be assigning anything out of them, but they do give extra practice with cataloging and classification.  They have examples and they have the answers in the back for self-learning.

Subject Analysis : A Blitz Cataloging Workbook  by Bobby Ferguson
MARC/AACR2/Authority Control : A Blitz Cataloging Workbook  by Bobby Ferguson

These two workbooks and the two main texts are all published by Libraries Unlimited.
